Sundance is over…now what do we do? I know, get outside and play in the snow!

In the last post we talked about how mother nature hadn’t been so generous with her snow this year, things have changed and the snowsports have gotten pretty good as of late. Here is a little report from our perspective.

Alpine Skiers will be excited to see base depths at all three World Class Resorts in Park City up near 50.” Deer Valley is reporting (as of 1/30/12) a 55″ base, Park City 53″ and Canyons Resort 44.” Two different storms nailed us last week and the skiing and riding has been great with soft snow conditions all over the mountain(s). If you are around this weekend (the first weekend of February) you will want to certainly look into attending a few events of the Freestyle World Cup Event. There will be a lot going on, so check out the schedule.

If you are into tubing, you haven’t lived until you’ve had a day at Gorgoza. High speed thrills on an inner-tube.

Many visitors don’t realize this, but Park City is rapidly becoming known for their wonderful Nordic skiing trails too. There really are three major areas to Nordic ski (and snowshoe) locally. Well over 25K in the Round Valley Area, White Pine Touring, and the Basin Trails located out near Kimball Junction. Rentals are available at White Pine Touring.

So when you are ready to book your trip to Park City, take a quick look at these deals. Maybe one of them fits into your plans.

See you out on the snow.

So here’s the deal, we aren’t going to lie and tell you it’s the best winter we’ve ever had – nope, just not going to do. However, Park City and the surrounding World Class resorts have made mountains out of molehills!

Lets talk about current conditions for a bit. For the small amounts of natural snow that mother nature has thrown our way, the three Park City, UT resorts are doing quite well actually.

Deer Valley Resort > 27″ base

Canyons Resort > 22″ base

Park City Mountain Resort > 19″ base

If you want to compare apples to apples, the majority of the Colorado resorts are reporting in the same neighborhood of about 25″ for a base depth. The anomalies are the southern resorts which have benefited from the southern storms always associated with a La Nina year. So, with that being said, Park City is doing extremely well, in large part due to the extraordinary efforts of the snow making teams at each resort. Have a read from this Editorial (no need to re-write it) in yesterdays Park Record Newspaper.

So what does the rest of the winter look like? Well if it where I, and I’m a betting man, I’d be booking a ski vacation to Utah sometime in February through mid-April. Check out what I pulled from the NOAA web site about La Nina patterns:

FOR (Jan, Feb, Mar) 2012 ABOVE MEDIAN PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS ARE FAVORED FOR PARTS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST, THE NORTHERN ROCKIES, AND WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN GREAT PLAINS. THE CHANCES FOR ABOVE MEDIAN PRECIPITATION ARE ELEVATED FROM THE MIDDLE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY NORTHEASTWARD TO INCLUDE MUCH OF THE GREAT LAKES REGION AND CENTRAL AND WESTERN PARTS OF THE MID-ATLANTIC STATES. BELOW MEDIAN PRECIPITATION IS FAVORED FOR PARTS OF SOUTHEASTERN ALASKA. THIS PRECIPITATION PATTERN IS ALSO TYPICAL FOR LA NINA WINTERS. ABOVE MEDIAN PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS ARE FAVORED IN PARTS OF WESTERN ALASKA BY MANY CLIMATE MODELS.

So start checking you calendar now, and plan your ski vacation to Utah – you probably sorry if you don’t.

Park City Mountain Resort will be the first of the Park City areas resorts to open, slatted to roll this weekend with three lifts and hopefully eight runs. Check out this story from Wednesdays Park Record, reported by:

Christopher Kamrani, The Park Record

Posted: 11/15/2011 03:52:19 PM MST

It’s time to grab your skis and dust off your snowboard because Park City Mountain Resort is scheduled to open Saturday, Nov. 19.

According to Park City Mountain Resort communications manager Andy Miller, three lifts are scheduled to be up and running Saturday morning: PayDay, 3 Kings and First Time.

Miller also said he anticipates six to eight runs opening, including Home Run, Treasure Hollow, PayDay, Quicksilver, Lower 3 Kings, Turtle Trail and Silver Hollow.

The resort is scheduled to debut its two brand-new conveyor lifts in the newly-dedicated beginner learning zone, located near the resort’s base area.

“It’s basically like a moving walkway at the airport,” Miller said. “You don’t have to get off a chair; it’s designed for beginners. It’s as simple as standing on a little carpet.”

Opening day is also scheduled to feature the new Flying Eagle Zip Line, which enters its first full season of operation at the resort. Miller said the new Zip Line is just “another winter adventure and a cool new way for people to experience the mountain without skis or snowboards.” The Zip Line is located next to the Alpine Coaster, which is also scheduled to open Saturday.

Miller added the rental shop will be up and running, along with the ski and snowboard schools. Legacy Café, Legends Bar & Grill and Kristi’s Coffee Shop are also expected to open their doors Saturday morning.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Park City Mountain Resort had not ironed out lift ticket prices, which are often offered at a reduced rate until more terrain is available, and Miller said he expects the decision to be made sometime later this week.

This Friday, Nov. 18, is the deadline for specially-priced Park City Mountain Resort Benefit Days lift tickets for a special price of $25.

According to Miller, tickets can only be purchased at the Park City Mountain Resort’s services office at the base area. Benefit Days lift tickets are good from Opening Day through Dec. 16, but must be purchased in person. Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward the newly created Park City Mountain Resort Legacy Fund, which will manage the resort’s future charitable work.

Thanks to a gracious snowstorm last weekend, Miller said the folks at PCMR are eagerly awaiting the next scheduled storm, which should arrive Friday evening and dump even more snow well into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service of Salt Lake City, the next significant storm system is expected to be a strong cold front and heavy snow is possible for several hours behind it.

Wolf Creek Pass is a hidden gem, located just 20 minutes from Park City. Wolf Creek Pass is located on Utah SR 35. In the summer, it provides amazing road biking and is great for a scenic drive. In the winter, the road is closed starting at Noblett’s Trailhead, around Mile Marker 13 in Woodland. The forest service kindly grooms the trail weekly for multiple users, including snowmobilers, snowshoers, and skiers. Best time to go is mid week, when there are less snowmobiles. The forest service grooms both Wolf Creek Pass and Mirror Lake Highway for winter use. If you have an extra day in Park City or the legs are a little tender from skiing and you need a day off, take a day trip to Wolf Creek Pass. You won’t regret it.

Here is a little video we took this week. The trail were quiet and the snow was just beginning to fall. It was a breathtaking morning.

WOW!! 50+ inches of snow since Sunday and it is still snowing. This is a great early Christmas present for everyone. With a big storm and limited time, locals are very efficient in their pursuit of fresh tracks. With no time to wait in the corral for the upper lifts to open after avi control, there are some secrets we are going to let you in on. At Park City Mountain Resort when McConkey’s and Jupiter lifts are on hold, stay on Crescent on the lower mountain. 90% of the people will bypass the lower mountain and all the goodness they see under the lift. Ski Team Ridge is the most underutilized part of the entire mountain. It has long consistent fall lines, perfect spacing between the aspen trees and the best part….no one is there. Once you unload at the Crescent Lift, head right. Go to the left of the radio tower. Head down the cat track and you will see a sign for Erica’s Gold and Willy’s. Duck in to your right. The best shot’s are if you continue skiers left and continue to traverse. The further you traverse, the less tracks. It opens into a great expanse of wonderful powder. With all this snow, we took our own advice and were able to hit 4 runs in an hour. And we passed no more than half a dozen other tracks in that hour. Simply put…AMAZING!

PS. Don’t tell anyone we told you!

When people ask “Why do you live in Park City?” I think the best why to explain it is, we are all just big kids who refuse to grow up. Sure, we have responsibilities just like the next guy. But admittedly, we have our priorities a bit out of whack. I can’t speak for every aging ski bum, but for me, there was a fork in the road, usually around the first few years after college. The much larger, well traveled straight road, with a wide horizon was for those who wanted a more traditional and stable road, based more on the pursuit of financial stability, family upbringing and close community. But for many ski town dwellers, we blew passed the big fork to the draw of the less traveled narrow twisting road. The desire to see what was around the next corner was too much of a draw. Like many have done before, we headed west. For us skiers, that meant, for the most part, the Rockies, Wasatch and Teton’s. If you wonder which kids are more likely to move out west and gamble their financial future on the search for mountain powder and desert solitude, you need to look no further than the kid in class that the teacher continueally yelled at to stop looking out the window.

Today was a great example of why we live where we live. Here is a little video. The idea isn’t that we ski the gnarliest lines and huck the biggest cliffs everyday (and quite honestly, our knees can’t take it anymore). We don’t live a ski movie. It’s about friendship and sharing experiences. It’s about being in a town where everyone had different starting points, but we all ended up in the same place, because we all a little different from the norm. We all have similar stories. We are the modern day, “Land of Misfit Toys”. Today, three such misfits got together and had a great lunch! There were thousands of such “lunch meeting’s” in mountain towns around the west. This is our idea of a “Power Lunch.”
